They should attempt to maintain possession of the ball with their hands. Stopping a shot does not imply that they have full possession. Hold onto the ball, but you only have a certain amount of time to get rid of it, so you eithor punt the ball, throw it, or kick it. Your choice.

If a player that is not a goalie blocks a shot that was meant to be a goal is that considered a blocked shot or a shot on goal?

It is a blocked shot, not a shot on goal. To be counted as a shot on goal it has to be stopped by the goalie or a goal.

What type of NHL shot qualifies for a NHL shot on goal?

There is no NHL definition or rule of a shot, therefore, a shot on goal is up to the discretion of the official scorer. But in general terms, a shot on goal is a shot that is taken with the intent to score that either goes into the net for a goal or the goalie saves from going into the net for a goal. A shot that hits the goalpost or crossbar, or a shot the goalie stops that would not have gone in the net is not considered a shot on goal. A clearing pass that goes through everybody and winds up being stopped by the goalie is not considered a shot on goal because there was not intent by the 'shooter' to score a goal. Similarly an errant pass from a teammate that is stopped by the goalie is not considered a shot on goal.

Lacrosse goalie scores goal in his own crease?

In a game, the goalie can accidentally score on his or her own goal. If they try to stop a shot and it bounces off of them and goes fully past the goal line, then it does count as a goal for the opposing team. The goalie is also allowed to leave the crease and in some rare cases can actually go up and score in the other team's goalie.

Does the defense mens defend the goal?

The defenders stand in front of the goalie and goal, and keep the ball away from the goal. Although, if the goalie takes the ball and starts running down field and loses it, the defender will step in the goal in order to not allow a long shot goal.

In Ice Hockey What is considered a 'shot on goal' and who determines and keeps count?

A shot on goal is any shot that enters the net or any shot that would normally have entered the net if not stopped by the goalie. Shots that deflect off the posts or crossbar and stay out of the net are not counted as shots on goal. The number of shots and whether a shot puck counts as a shot is determined by a statistician employed by the NHL who is stationed at the rink.Yes, a goal counts as a shot on net. However it obviously does not count as a save for the goalie.
