TO is short for turnover, which describes a situation where a team loses possession of the ball. An example of a turnover in a dead-ball situation is failing to place a ball into play within 5 seconds. In a live-ball situation, turnovers are charged against a team when a player steps out of bounds, makes an errant pass that results in a steal, or failing to bring the ball past the half court line within 8 seconds (NBA). These are only examples, and are not all-encompassing. The stat has been available since the 1978 season in NBA.
