The number on the bottom of the bat is the lenght. 30 is assumed, so the number is for the 2nd number in length.
For example if the bottom says 2, the length is 32
If the bottom says 4, the length is 34.

Inch Marks - A term used with Baseball bats referring to the number stamped into the knob of the bat indicating the length on store model bats. Model number is not an inch mark. Inch Marks will include number like 3, 33, 03 for a 33 inch bat. With a Louisville Slugger bat if the number is followed by letters like 3PR that would indicate a 33 inch Pete Rose bat. Adirondack Professional model bats will typically have the model number on the knob followed by a Letter. for example Hank Aaron used a 63 A, Mickey Mantle used a 288 D. Louisville slugger began using model numbers on the knob in 1943 then moving the model number to the barrel in 1977. For example a K55 Mickey Mantle pro model would have K55 on the knob as opposed to the store model bat with K55 appearing on the barrel.
i have wondered the same thing but i think it is what the minus (-) is. the minus of a bat is the amount of ounces lighter it is than the length... for examply if you bat was 32 inches and it had a 2 on the bottom of the bat, your bat would be 30 ounces because 32-2 is 30
The designation of BC5 means that it it a Roberto "Bob" Clemente model bat that is 35" long. For a while, the companies tried to americanize Roberto by calling him Bob. Louisville Slugger used this designation for the bats for a short time as well, thus the BC5 model instead of the RC5 model that had been used. My feeling is that the RC model is the one that I look for because no one knows of Bob Clemente, but everyone know about Roberto Clemente.
