stumped in cricket means to put (a batsman) out by knocking down a stump or by dislodging a bail with the ball held in the hand at a moment when the batsman is off his ground.

In cricket, if you are stumped, you are out. The batter's job is to protect the stumps when the bowler throws the ball at them. If the stumps are hit, the batter is "stumped" and is out.
