Players are required to wear a uniform; This consists of a shirt or jersey, shorts (or usually a skirt for girls & women), and socks. This is so players and umpires can tell the players of one team from the other. Additionally, you will need suitable footwear for the surface being used and it is common for associations to require a mouthguard and shinpads of all players. The captain also needs to wear an armband or other such object to show this. Most teams can get away with just matching shirts or jerseys, but at higher and especially international levels players on the same team must have virtually everything in common, their shoes must be of a darker colour (to contrast with the ball) and any extra personal gear must be in keeping with the team colours of the uniform part they are near e.g. at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, some players were reprimanded for having spandex shorts of a different colour visible beneath their uniform.
