Canada. Modern day basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian sports coach and innovator. The game and first basic rules were defined by Naismith on 21st December, 1891 -- he asked his class to play a game that same day.
An ancient version was played by the Mayan Indians of Mexico/Central America. The losers were sacrificed to the gods.
