If you are talking purely about TV ratings, merchandise sales, overall largest fan base, money generating, ticket sales, global recognition, historical relevance.
Than the answer is 100% The Toronto Maple Leafs
there are many hockey teams in the NHL most people like to watch the Canadian teams. some of the popular Canadian teams are Toronto and my personal favorite Ottawa.
Montreal use to be on of the most cheered for teams that won many Stanley cups.
Montreal is now not as strong as they use to be.
Most people now cheer for Toronto Ottawa Pittsburgh.
Most people like Pittsburgh because of thier young star player Sydney Crosby.

Sorry to say, but one of the most popular teams in NHL is the Vancouver Canucks. They have an extremely large fan base and the reason behind this is that a lot of there fans also come from Europe (Naslund and Sedin twins fans), USA, and obviously, BC/Canada. They had a poll on the NHL website about this and Detroit won, but the poll may or may not be inaccurate due to A) Not all of hockey fans have computers. My uncle's a huge Canuck fan and he doesn't have a computer, along with his family in Quebec. B) There was a report of a site crash on the day the poll was released. I DO live in BC but I've been to Europe and Phoenix, Miami, and Colorado, there I saw lots of people wearing Vancouver shirts whom I asked if they liked the team and almost all replied that Vancouver was there favorite team (One replied that his San Jose jersey was stained so he needed that one). Truth is a lot of teams are extremely popular in there cities, but both teams you named are in the Ontario residence, so it's not a fact, rather an opinion. So far the top 5 most popular teams are 1) Detroit 2) Vancouver 3) Washington (This could be 2, so 2nd and 3rd are tied) 4) Calgary 5) Minnesota
If you live in BC/Alberta/Near US border, I mine as well put this up to help out. Top 5 WHL teams.
1) Saskatoon Blades 2) Portland Winterhawks 3) Red Deer Rebels 4) Kelowna Rockets 5) Medicine Hat Tigers
Detroits fan base exploded in 2004 and rose until 2009. At the moment there fan base has evened out, losing and gaining fans evenly. Vancouvers fan base erupted in 2009, the Sedins starting to show there skills and has sharply risen since then. Many fans of the Canadiens have changed over to the Canucks. A few years back the GM announced that the rise in popularity was from the Canucks willing to play for fans and ability to make amazing comebacks in the worst of times. I have only recently begun to watch the canucks play. I live in Kamloops so i'm more into Kelowna Rockets and Kamloops Blazers WHL, but i've gotten into Vancouver over the past year and have found these stats all over. Feel free to do research yourself. Another thing that you may want to take note of is the fact that Vancouver plays for the fans because they want to but also because they encourage them more so than other teams. Most games played in Vancouver are ended with a win, and all games played in Vancouver where the game is sold out and the crowds cheering (even when they're scored on) they've pulled through. As for Detroit, there fan base exploded in 2004 for some reason. I believe that that year was when there star players (Zetterburg and the other 2) started to tear through stat records. They are actually still growing I believe, so I would like to cross out my above statement. Proof is that my brother was a huge fan of Minnesota and this year he changed to Detroit. He knows all the stats of all the players by heart, so they're still growing. If i'm wrong, feel free to correct any of my comments. Leave a website link as proof.
This is up for debate and really just a matter of opinion. But based on the amount of fans that they have and the money in the organization? I would say (in the NHL) that the most popular team is either the Detroit Red Wings or the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Most non-Canadian hockey players have been drafted from American teams to the Canadian teams.
