At least nine players per team, six infielders and three outfielders, an unpire (referee), three white bases, home plate, a bat, a softball, cleats for your feet, a leather glove, a batting helmet, batting gloves (optional), knee pads (for sliding), catchers gear (shin guards, chest protector, helmet)
The basics:
If you are just going to get together a group of people to play an informal game you only need a bat, a ball ( maybe 2 ) a glove and a patch of grass to play on.
However
If you are a girl wanting to start out playing fastpitch there are some things you will need.
Most teams will have an assortment of bats and batting helmets as well as catchers gear but you may want to have your own.
Bats for the beginner should be just a basic cheap aluminum bat that when stood on end next to your leg will reach your wrist ( arm at your side )and be light enough to swing easily. For the more experienced use the same length technique but opt for a more expensive composite or hollow barrel high performance alloy and shoot for about a 9 ounce drop from the length ( a 31 inch bat should weigh about 22 ounces ), they go as far as 11 or 12 ounce drop but that is a preference. You should always go for a comfortable weight but progress to a heavier bat when you can. The maximum length for a softball bat is 34 inches and college players are swinging them in weights up to 34 to 36 ounces for maximum action on the ball.
Ball they are supplied by your league but if you get your own go for the .47 cor ( asa and usssa ) 11 inch for 10 and under ans 12 inch for 12 and up in optic yellow.
Glove Beginners again should go cheap but purchase a pre broken in model as the break in process is difficult and you will out grow it in a year. 8 to 10 year olds are using an 11 inch ball, 12 and up use a 12 inch ball and your glove should be at least 10 or 11 inches, Infielders will use a small glove 9 to 11 inches and outfielders go 11 to 13 inches, it should fit the hand comfortably and not have a tendency to come off easily. First basemen and catchers use a mit designed for that position but only go there if you have decided that you only want to play there or are good at multiple positions. Bring a ball with you when you go shopping for a glove to make sure it fits well into the pocket and pay attention to the fact that Baseball and softball gloves are different, Girls gloves, the good ones that is have a thumb hole and only 3 other fingers on them. That is so she can put 2 fingers in the pinkey hole ( girls hands are not as strong as boys and it has ben found that this way gives more closing strength )
Cleats fit them like shoes, expect to grow out of them in a year so don't buy the most expensive ones and be aware of the difference between soccer and softball cleats. They will have rubber cleats and when you get to the point of being good at softball or where you can wear the same size for 2 years go for the replaceable cleat models so you can extent the life of the shoe.
protective gear Sliders are required by asa and usssa and are basicly spandex shorts with or without padding that extend down to the mid thigh. This is so that when sliding the outer layer will move freely against the slick fabric and you will prevent some nasty rasberries.
Leg guards are handy for those bad hops and fouls off the bat, get one for the left leg for righties or right leg for lefties, some people go with one for both legs but I find that just inhibits fast running more. Having it on the left leg on a rightie protects the front leg when batting and it is the bottom leg when sliding so the knee and shin are protected. More accomplished players go with knee pads on both legs when wearing shorts for knee protection but I have always preferred pants with built in padding as the girls are less inhibited from diving, sliding and just plain getting dirty when the whole leg is protected and they can run full speed in them.
Helmet try it out at the store to make sure it fits snug and have a certified face shield attached ( required by asa and usssa ) and a good chin strap ( also required ).
painting or customizing will have to be done with approved materials and the helmet will need to be inspected afterward ( see your league handbook )
Batting gloves pretty self explanitory, make sure they fit and breath well and keep them on when running so if you dive you wont scar those hands up. Many people keep the glove hand one on all the time for extra padding when catching.
optional equipment also includes elbow guards for hitting, forearm or wrist guards, face shields for defensive playing for infielders ( pitchers or 3rd basemen ), eye black for sun glare ( they make stickies that can have your team logo on them )
catching gear get fitted at the sports store, full face helmets are the way to go now and they look cool, the gear is usually sized by age ( IE 10-13 or 14-16 ) but make sure it covers well and you can move. I do not suggest knee savers as they make the catcher sit too high and get lazy. Softball catchers need to sit low enough that a ball cannot pass under their butts, and be able top move side to side a full width of their bodies very quickly.
Now you are ready to "Play hard and have fun"

In regular games there are usually 2. In some cases, like in championship games, there are 3 umpires.
Officials in softball are called umpries
To play softball
Softball will not be a medal sport at the 2012 Games in London. Both softball and baseball were removed from the medal sports beginning with the 2012 Games.
Accordin to some softball players that have played and won alot of games .. ove 50,000 games have been won.
Hmmm....maybe in softball.
Softball made its debut in the Olympics at the 1996 games in Atlanta. Unfortunately, the 2008 Games will be the last time softball is competed as it, along with baseball, has been dropped from the Olympic Games events schedule.
older softball was a slower pitch cause they are not as strong or built as we are today!!!
