There is the field of play, which is the rectangular area bounded by the sidelines and the goal lines, and the two end zones. Anything else is just markings on the field or markings of the boundaries.

When playing volleyball, there are many things on the court that factor into a win.
- Lines
- there are the outside lines that when a ball lands outside, it is considered out of bounds and whichever team put it there has just given a point to the other team. It can happen on a serve or during a play.
- There is the attack line which is where the front row stands roughly, and where the hitters start their approach.

- Positions
- Position 6 (Server) is the back row far right side, where you serve and pass balls.
- Position 1 (Libero) is the middle of the back row, always positioned the farthest back to get deep balls and to dig. They cover most of the back row.
- Position 2 is the far left side of the back row, where you dig and pass up to the setter.
- Position 3 (Power/Outside Hitter) is the main player that get's the 3rd pass to spike the ball over the net as an attack.
- Position 4 (Middle/Blocker) are the main blockers to quickly rebound attacks and hit from the middle of the court. Usually easier to receive because they have less space to approach.
- Position 5 (Setter) sets the ball to any of the attackers on the court for a hit. They rule the play and get 2nd balls.

On either side of the pitch, in front of the goal posts, there is an 18 yard box containing a smaller 6 yard box directly in front of the goal. In the middle of the field there is the half way line, 50 meters away from each goal, which has a large circle - known as the centre circle in the middle of it.
