History states what the teams wore had been changing with ways to show their team colors. When players began to wear knickers in the 1800's, long socks were worn. Stirrups socks with the team color were worn. The stirrup socks are worn on top of the long white socks and they were called "santitaries". Since the stirrup socks had to be dyed to match the team color. the wearer wore them over the "santiaries" to prevent touching the dyed stirrup sock, thinking the dye in the stirrups were a health hazzard. This type of sock had a loop that went under the foot. The loop on this sock showed the white part of a sock with a foot. Today, more high school and colleges Baseball teams continue to wear stirrups. the reason why the baseball players began to wear knickers in the first place was the following: While running the legs of their 1800 pantaloons (pants) would get caught in their legs and hindered their running. Baseball players in those days began to tape or tie the legs of the pants close to their legs or stick them in their socks.
