Boston Red Sox are amongst the oldest of the American league teams. In 1903, they forced the owners of the National League to challenge the NL champ to play the AL champ (Red Sox) to a "world series." The NL agreed sending the Pitts. Pirates to Boston in hopes of winning the series and eliminating the young AL and preserve their baseball monopoly. Red Sox won the first world series, and created the 2 league MLB style World Series for years to come. Red Sox won a few other world series, but all this ended in 1919, when they sold Babe Ruth to the new AL team in New York, known as the Yankees. This started the Curse of the Bambino...requiring an 86 yr long wait before the Red Sox would win another world Series. Many Red sox players went on to the Hall of Fame, but the team will be forever immortalized by the series of unlucky mishaps and strange coincidences that would constantly rob them of post season glory for that 86 year time span.
Because it has always been a part of the Boston Red Sox uniforms. The name Red Sox, chosen by owner John I. Taylor after the 1907 season, refers to the red hose in the team uniform beginning 1908. 'Sox' was also adopted by newspapers needing a headline-friendly form of Stockings, as "Stockings Win!" in large type would not fit on a page. The Spanish language media sometimes refers to the team as Medias Rojas for Red Stockings.
