A strikeout is an out when a batter accumulates three strikes.
It's a reference to a batter who is called out on strikes by the umpire.
In this instance the original batter would be charged with the Strikeout --- this is the only instance in which the original batter is charged with the AB and the result of the at bat --- if there is any other count or any other outcome then the pinch hitter is credited with everything
In MLB, according to Rule 6.05(d) the batter is called out. The play is scored as a strikeout.
A 'K' is a strikeout where the batter swung at strike three. A 'k' is a strikeout where the batter did not swing at strike three.
Stat-sheet wise, a batter's turn officially starts when the first pitch happens. However, there are a number of ways he could not get credit for the plate appearance. If he leaves the at-bat -- injured, ejected, or otherwise -- he does not get a plate appearance. The only exception is if he leaves with two strikes and the new batter strikes out, then the first batter is charged with a strike-out. (See rule 10.15b)
The pinch batter assumes the count that the original batter had.
The "K" is placed backwards in cases where the batter strikes out looking.
Yes he can. He is credited with an AB (at bat), rather than on OAB (Official at bat), for statistical purposes, since he did not begin the at bat with a 0/0 count.count.Clarification:I just wanted to add on the answer above:1. If a player comes in to pinch hit with any two-strike count and strikes out, this is the only scenario in which the original batter is charged with the strikeout and the AB, the pinch hitter is charged with neither an AB or the K
The hit goes to the substitute batter. Here is the official ruleRule 10.15 (b)When a batter leaves the game with two strikes against him, and the substitute batter completes the strikeout, the Official Scorer shall charge the strikeout and the time at bat to the first batter. If the substitute completes the turn in any other manner, including a base on balls, the Official Scorer shall score the action as having been that of the substitute batter.
A batter is credited with an at bat for every plate appearance except: 1) base on balls 2) hit by pitch 3) sacrifice fly 4) sacrifice bunt 5) catcher's interference If an inning ends while a batter is in the middle of an at bat (eg., a base runner is thrown out stealing for the 3rd out) no at bat is credited and the batter is the first batter to bat in the next inning. If the batter is replaced before the at bat is completed, no at bat is credited unless the batter was replaced with two strikes and the replacement batter strikes out. The strikeout is credited to the batter who was replaced.
The pitcher does not get an assist unless the batter strikes out and the ball bounces to the pitcher, who throws the ball to the catcher, who tags out the runner.
