Usually there are nine players on the field. The first base player, second base player, shortstop player, third base player, pitcher, catcher, right field player, left field player, and center field player. This does not include the opposite teams batter.

In softball, there are 9 players on the field at one time. There are also two, sometimes three, umpires. There are also the first base coach and the third base coaches from the offensive team.

There are 9 players on the field at a time playing defense. You usually want 2 or 3 backup pitchers, but they can also play other positions. SO, no fewer than 12, but usually not a whole lot more than 20.
