The only 'offensive' player would be the server, who always starts out the point. No player really plays offense or defense, because no player (or pair of players in doubles) always retains possession of the ball. In basketball, football, and soccer, a team or player has possession of the ball, and the opposing team has to prevent the team from scoring.
