There were 16 countries that participated in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and they were the U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, Cuba, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Panama, Australia, Italy, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, the 16 teams were split up into four pools for the tournament - A, B, C and D - Pool A consisted of Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and China, Pool B consisted of South Africa, the U.S, Canada and Mexico, Pool C consisted of Puerto Rico, Panama, Cuba and Netherlands and Pool D which consisted of Italy, Australia, Dominican Republic and Venezuela.
