The only two NFL quarterbacks have been elected to the US Congress. The first was Jack Kemp of the Buffalo Bills and the second was Heath Shuler of the Washington Redskins.
Jack Kemp played professional football from 1957 to 1969. He had his greatest success as a member of the Buffalo Bills, from 1962-1969. Jack Kemp was elected to congress in 1971. He served 9 terms, representing New York's 31st congressional district. He was tapped as President George HW Bush's Housing Secretary from 1989 to 1993.
Congressman Kemp passed away in May of 2009, after losing his battle with cancer. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 by President Barack Obama.
Heath Shuler played for the Washington Redskins from 1994-1996 and spent his last season, 1997, in New Orleans.
Shuler won a seat in the US House of Representatives ten years after he left the NFL. He won North Carolina's 11th congressional districts seat in 2007 and would serve in Congress with distinction for three terms. In 2013 he decided not to run for reelection.
