Whilst the concept was started in Rugby School Warwickshire, England in 1823 by Webb Ellis creation of rugby proper came in late 1870, when the Secretary of Richmond FC proposed a meeting to codify a separate set of rules for the Rugby clubs. This took place shortly after on January 26th 1871. So up to 2011 its been formally a game for 140 years. Prior to this it was actually football (the predecessor of Association Football or Soccer)
