Actually no, they're not specifically called shin guards, its a matter of preference and shin pad is as acceptable as shin guard and its not reccommended to put them in the washing machine as they can be damaged in the drum, just soak them for about half an hour in warm water that has washing detergent then rinse them off and leave them to dry
