In chess tournaments they try to have like leveled players playing each other in the first round so this would make first round match-ups look like 1v2 3v4 5v6 and 7v8. With losers feeding into the losers bracket and winners advancing to eventually meet the survivor of the losers bracket. In single elimination tournaments the higher seeds usually play the lower seeds such as 1v8 2v7 3v6 and 4v5. I think most double elimination tournaments follow this format. In the double elimination brackets I created I followed this format and tried to randomize things so players in the losers bracket would be less likely to meet up with the person who put them in the losers bracket in the first place.

Go to my website bracketman.com for pre-printed brackets for 3 to 13 teams. These brackets are in Microsoft Excel and Apple Numbers format and auto-populate the seeds into the bracket as you enter them. It's a free download and requires no registration. Enjoy!

Use an 8 team bracket with a single play-in game between the 8 and 9 seeded teams.

The 8-9 winner plays the 1 seed in the first round

The 2 seed plays the 7 seed in the first round.

The 3 seed plays the 6 seed in the first round.

The 4 seed plays the 5 seed in the first round.

The 8/9 vs. 1 winner plays the 2 vs. 7 winner in the semi-finals.

The 3 vs. 6 winner plays the 4 vs. 5 winner in the semi-finals.

The remaining winners play in the championship while the losers play in a consolation game if one is so ordered.

Seed the teams according to the results of the pool play.

1. Seed 1 plays seed 8
2. Seed 2 plays seed 7
3. Seed 3 plays seed 6
4. Seed 4 plays seed 5

5. The winners from games 1 and 4 play.
6. The winners from games 2 and 3 play.

The winners of games 5 and 6 play as the championship game.

My bracket for a double elimination tournament at bracketman.com has the 13 seed and the 12 seed playing a play in game to play the 11 seed. The winner of the 11 v 12/13 plays the 1 seed. The 10 v 9 winner plays the 2 seed, 7 v 8 winner plays 3 and 5 v 6 plays the 4 seed. The losers feed into the losers bracket where the ultimate winner of that bracket plays the winner of the winners bracket. Enjoy!

Go to bracketman.com I have created double elimination brackets for 3 to 13 teams in Microsoft Excel and Apple Numbers format. Simply type in the seedings and it auto-populates their place in the bracket. It is a free download and requires no registration!
