Nashville is called The Athens Of The South, and the Titans were guardians of Athens, so the name Titans was resurrected after it was dropped from New York's AFL/AFC, which had used the Titans name until changing to the New York Jets.

The name is derived from ancient mythology. In 253 b.c. it was said that what is today is known as Tennessee was the land of the giants.... which later became known as the land of the titans. In 1999 team owner Kenneth "Bud" Adams retired the name Oilers and used the name Titans for the franchise as it opened its new stadium, known as The Coliseum (today as LP Field).

The reason Adams chose the Titans was twofold. 1. The Titans was a nickname for one of the original AFL teams which Adams helped start. 2. Nashville is the "Athens of the South" a nickname given to it based on the large amount of educational institutions in the city. The city even buit a full size replica of the Geek Parthenon to honor this nickname. As the above poster said the term Titans is derived from Greek mythology therefore the connection.

Their original name of Oilers made no sense for Tennessee (which is not an oil-producing state) and the name Titans was chose in homage to Nashville's reputation as "The Athens Of The South."
