The name of the Toronto Maple Leafs is a bit of a mystery. There have been theories, including that it was named after a local Baseball club. The most common theory -- and by virtue, the most accepted by fans -- is that the team was named after Conn Smythe's World War I regiment.
One thing that is most commonly mistaken is that the team was named after the Maple Leaf on the Canadian flag. This is positively, absolutely, FALSE. The current flag of Canada was not adopted until 1965, while the franchise was renamed the Maple Leafs in 1927.
