During a league game against Reading on 14-Oct-2006, Čech challenged for a ball in the Chelsea penalty area with Stephen Hunt. Hunt's knee hit Čech head and he was taken off straight away. He later underwent surgery for a depressed skull fracture, which doctors claimed could have killed him.

Bizarrely enough, the replacement goalkeeper (Carlo Cudicini) was knocked unconscious in the same game and also had to be taken off, leaving Chelsea defender John Terry to wear the gloves until the end of the game.
