The easiest way to track the dates of a Final Four (for the NCAA men's basketball tournament) is to look at a calendar and find the first Monday in April. That Monday is the date of that year's Championship Game between the winners of the first round of the Final Four. The first round of the Final Four is played on the Saturday before the Championship Game. For example, in 2013, the Championship Game was played on Monday, April 1st. The tournament Semi-finals (the first round of the Final Four) where held on Saturday, March 30th.

Imagine you have four empty buckets in which to put any of the four letters Y, A, R, D into. At first you have four letters that can be placed in any of the four empty buckets. Once you've placed a letter in a bucket you only have three letters and three empty buckets to choose from. And so on... So there are 4x3x2x1 = 24 permutations of the word YARD.
April 3rd and April 5th. It is always final four on Saturday and final on first Monday in April
Depends on how you look at it. In 1939, the "first" NCAA Tournament, there were only 8 schools participating, so after one round you had the "Final Four". In 1951 the tournament expanded to 16 schools, so after two rounds you had the "Final Four". From 1951 thru 1984 there were several different formats used for the tournament, it wasn't until 1985 where you see the present day format of 64 schools and a "Final Four" after winning four games as you know it. But to answer your question technically, 1939 was the first year.
