it mostly depends on what you mean by free. Cause when you get under the ball without touching the ground and the ball is low were you get down. That is a dig as what my coach told me.
I'm not familiar with the term free. I think you've explained the dig properly. The announcers at the Olympics are calling anything returned a dig. I started playing beach volleyball in Hermosa in 1955. At that time it was a get of a spike low in front of you. From the feeling of digging it out of the sand without the ball touching the sand first. The stu's all played in bikinis then too. It's always been part of beach volleyball, I guess.
