What is the closest that the nationals or expos have ever come to playing in the World Series?

Through the 2009 season, the Expos/Nationals have made the playoffs one time. That was 1981 when the Expos played the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.The League Championship Series at that time was a best 3 of 5. The 1981 NLCS went to a Game 5 and, going into the 9th inning of Game 5 that was played at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, the score was tied at 1-1. The Expos brought their best starting pitcher, Steve Rogers, into the game. After getting two quick outs, he gave up a home run to Rick Monday that gave the Dodgers the lead 2-1. The Expos got two walks in the bottom of the 9th but could not push across a run and they wound up losing the game and the NLCS.

When was there no world series?

The World Series has only been canceled twice; in 1904 and 1994. In 1904, the World Series was in its infancy and largely unorganized. The newly-formed American League was still viewed by National League veterans as the "junior league", and it was too much for New York Giants manager John McGraw to handle. When they won the pennant in 1904, McGraw and the Giants refused to face the Red Sox in the World Series. The Giants ended up winning the World Series the next year, anyways. 1994 was a different story. Players had gone on strike because the unions could not agree on a new set of terms. Personally, I don't feel that it justifies a strike, but I don't have a time machine to go back and change what happened. The latter half of the 1994 season was cancelled. The Montreal Expos were a heavy favorite to win that year, and Tony Gwynn was also expected to hit .400 that year. Neither of the two would ever happen. In 2005, after years of decline, the Montreal Expos packed their things and headed out to Washington. Gwynn never batted .400 and retired in 2001.
