Quarterback Alex Smith was a Heisman Trophy finalist and the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. The men's Basketball team, on the shoulders of Consensus All-American and National Player of the Year Andrew Bogut, made the Sweet 16. Bogut was the first pick in the 2005 NBA draft, making Utah the first school in NCAA history to boast a No. 1 pick in the NFL and NBA in the same year.

each year the nfl holds a draft of eligible college players. the draft is configured so that the team with the worst won-lost record gets to pick first in the draft (unless the team has given that pick to another team thru trades,etc)the teams have rounds (8) which they pick the player they want . free agents have two catergories undrafted college players and nfl players whose contract with their team has expired or the team has let go. a signed free agent either pro or college has contract that binds him to that team.

It's like an extra draft for those people that didn't go to college, or left early, or w/e (like Terrell Pryor). There's a whole different draft process, but every time a team drafts someone, they lost a draft pick come the next year.
