Any time there is thunder and lightning, it is best to get out of open fields and into shelter. It would be in everyone's best interest, including the fans, to not play a football game when there is thunder and lightning in the area. It's much better to be safe than sorry.
In non-professional football, they do delay a game for lightning/thunder, and on some cases, heavy rain.
