Yes, Andy Brown, a goaltender in the Eastern Hockey League, did wear a mask during his career. He is known for being one of the early adopters of the goalie mask in professional hockey, which became more common in the sport during the 1960s. Brown's use of the mask contributed to the evolving safety standards for goaltenders in hockey.
Probably the actual inventor of the mask will remain unknown. Masks were worn by some goalies after injuries even way back in the early days of hockey. However, goalie Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens is credited with making the mask a permanent part of the goalie's equipment back in the fifties. I would suggest you Google Plante or goalie masks to obtain more information.
The main purpose of a goalie mask is to protect the face of the goalie in a hockey game. The face needs to be protected because a shot at that speed could cause some serious damage to a person.
