Soft tip darts differ from steel tip darts in a few ways. First being the obvious, the point of the dart is plastic rather than steel. More importantly though, soft tip dart games play by different rules than steel tip in most cases. Examples are: - The throw line is a different measurment from the board - Points are calculated differently - The targets on the dartboard are larger than a steel tip dartboard In soft tip darts the dartboard is usually electronic and keeps score for the players. Another difference from steel tip, in soft tip as long as the dartboard registers your shot, your dart can fall out or never even have stuck and still count towards your shot. In steel tip the point of the dart must be touching the board in order to count.

Are soft tip darts safe?

"Safe" is a relative term. Soft tip darts are generally less likely to hurt someone than a steel-tip one, but you should never throw one at another person, and children should still always be monitored during their use just as with regular darts. Whilst the tip is inherently rounded, tips break regularly and can leave sharp edges, and even in their intact state can still cause serious injury to an eye if handled inappropriately, or represent a choking hazard to small children or animals. They are much safer for your furniture and walls though!
