Well, safety is very important in softball. If you are pitching, you should use a mask, or 3rd base/short stop. Since the ball is mostly coming to those people. Safety is important. But it all depends on what age group you are in, because the older, the more skilled you are, so you don't have to be as much protected. I was watching college softball, and I might be wrong, but I think i saw the pitcher wearing a protective mask.
