How many modern Olympics have there been?

This year (Beijing 2008) will be the 30th scheduled modern SUMMER Olympics - the first one was held in 1896 in Athens. HOWEVER the 1916 Berlin games were not held because of World War 1, the 1940 Tokyo games and the 1944 London games were not held because of World War 2. That makes Beijing the 27th games to actually take place. Addition: There have also been 22 Winter Olympics, although the ones in 1940 and 1944 were canceled.

So in total there have been 52 scheduled and 47 that have actually taken place.
