The distance really depends on the age group that the ref is dealing with. In a pro game, the center ref probably runs as much, if not more as much as the players. In younger kid's soccer, the ref doesn't run as much because the kids don't run too fast. The AR on the other hand doesn't run too much. They are only running the length of half the field. So, the question really depends.

The referee's function is to regulate and facilitate the play of the game. His activity consists of the many things he does while regulating the game, such as starting and stopping the game, calling fouls, managing restarts, etc.
It depends on what level of play and what regulations you are playing but the USAV regulations require that you have a first referee (up ref), a second referee (down ref), 2 line judges , a scorekeeper, libero tracker, book referee. which is a total of 7 referees. The first referee and the book referee have jursidiction over their reponsibilities.
