The length of time depends on the type of skydiving you would like to learn. A tandem jump is the easiest and fastest way to make a first jump. The class takes about thirty minutes or so, depending on the drop zone, and then you wait until it's time for your load on the airplane. The school will pair you with a certified instructor who will fit you with a passenger harness, suit, helmet, and other necessary equipment. Once suited up, you go to the plane with your instructor, ride up to 13,000 feet, and exit hooked to the front of your instructor. The freefall lasts between 45 seconds to a minute followed by a five minute canopy ride. If you want to learn to jump solo using the accelerated freefall method, class for the first jump takes about a day and then you jump with two instructors holding onto you. The next several jumps are also preceded by classes but shorter in duration. It normally takes between 8 to 12 jumps to be trained enough to jump without direct instructor supervision in freefall.
