Depends on who you're talking about. Most likely all of the showoff atheletes' worlds revolve around money and themselves. Others care very little about money. Some would play even if they didn't get payed.

Hell yeah it is! Look at this world we live in, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is linked to money, and that does not exclude sports. Sports is very general term and to play any sport, one must think of the cost of it. Not anyone can play any sport they wish and that defeats the purpose that sports should be available for everyone. For example, unless you stay in a private residence that has a swimming pool or you decide to swim in the sea, a simple swim at the swimming complex could cost a few dollars. Unless you stay in a private residence that is equipped with a gym, working out at the gym would cost you a few hundred a year maybe and you might just have to sign up for membership. If one were to go and play Golf, the cost would blow you away. However, this sports I mentioned are probably the higher expense kind of sports. Others such as playing Basketball, soccer or a jog in the park would be free once you can find the venue to play it. Sometimes people refuse to play sports just because of the cost incurred to enjoy them. Especially with us living in the buzzling city with no time to waste, it somehow gives us a even better reason to not play sports.

Another good example would be the Olympics held once every four years. Compared to the past, the Olympic Games held today cost a bomb just to make the event a large scale one. Increasing number of countries from all over the globe participate in this event, sending their best atheletes at hand. The sponsorships to make this event successful and the money spent by spectators to fly there just to WATCH the event cost a fortune. According to wikipedia on Modern Olympics, "The Olympics are one of the largest media events. The growth of the Olympics is one of the largest problems the Olympics face today. Although allowing professional athletes and attracting sponsorships from major international companies solves the financial problems in the 1980s, the large number of athletes, media and spectators makes it difficult and expensive for host cities to organise the Olympics". That emphasizes my point that money is indeed too closely linked with sports. In fact, money is too closely linked to any existing thing in the world.

Well... I don't know where you are in the world (which affects which sports you're talking about), so I will just give some examples on my opinion about the influence of money on the sports world. Before I go on any further, it is known that in whatever league you're talking about, the better the player is, they are of more value than other players. First of all, let's talk about some baseball. Generally, the best teams in the MLB are usually the ones with the higher salary caps. What that means basically is that they have a certain amount of money that they can spend on each player. Some teams like the New York Yankees have high salary caps. With a higher salary cap, the more money they have on average to spend on a player. For the Yankees, they can spend an average of around $7.7 million per player. Compared to the Florida Marlins at the bottom of the charts for salary caps in the MLB for 2009, they can only spend an average of around $1.3 million per player. Going with what I said earlier, the Yankees can afford better players because they have more money. They can buy all the players like Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui, and CC Sebathia and basically have a better chance at winning the World Series. I personally believe that money is the only reason why the Yankees are the most winning est team in the MLB.
Now on to football. There are basically the same things that apply for this situation as well as the MLB. To be brief, usually the teams that have the most talent (and usually the most money to buy that talent) will usually win. Money also has an effect on the entertainment that is being provided for certain experiences. I like to bring this up because of what the Dallas Cowboys have recently done. They recently built a new stadium that cost $1.15 billion to create. Just to name some if it's features, it has the world largest retractable dome, and the largest HD tv screen above the field that is 160 ft. wide and 70 ft. tall. The stadium was built by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones who is #196 on the Forbes' list of richest Americans. I'll just let you come to your own conclusions.
The last "major" sport I will talk about is soccer (or football, depending where you're from). I will look specifically look at the English Premier League, which some would say is the best all around soccer league in the world. There are many different players and teams that I can talk about, but the main thing I'm going to talk about is Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo. If you don't know who he is, many would say that he is the best soccer player in the world. I believe that on July 1, 2009 (date not sure), Manchester United and Real Madrid (Spanish Primera Division) made a deal for Real Madrid to get Ronaldo. The transfer fee alone was 93 million Euros, which turns out to be around $130 million in US Dollars. That fee alone was just for the transfer, and not for the salary that Ronaldo was going to be paid to play for Real Madrid. That's an example of what money can do and how it affects players and organizations.
I'm sorry for the long answer, but I hope that this helps you understand the impact and influence that money has on sports.

In a large stand point it makes you play better because professional players are motivated to play better for a raise, while recreational teams aren't as motivated because they are play rec.
