There are many reasons older people do not play sports, including:

1. Mindset: They think they are too old to play the sport therefore they do not.

2. Physical limitations: People do deteriorate a bit physically as we age, more so if a healthy lifestyle has not been maintained.

  1. With contact sports that means there is an easier chance for older people to develop tendinitis or tear muscle, cartilage, or ligaments.
  2. Basically it is easier for older people to become injured while playing a contact sport, again more so if a healthy lifestyle has not been maintained.
  3. Older bodies often lose calcium from the bones. This means bones are more likely to fracture. Complications from some fractures can be fatal; for example, hip fracture often leads to fatal pneumonia.
  4. As a preventative measure, many older people wear braces on the knees, elbows, wrists, or ankles depending on which joints will be stressed by the sport.
  5. Stamina decreases as people age. Changes in blood vessels and the heart make blood flow more sluggish and blood vessels can narrow.
  6. Chronic illnesses often start in mid-life. Hypertension, Diabetes, and other chronic diseases often makes activity harder to perform.

3. Societal expectations - Society values youth and prefers to see youthful figures playing sports.

4. Society's love of "beauty" and "handsomeness" precludes many older adults. Society loves the "bathing beauty" in a 2-piece bathing suit over the 50-year old woman in a one-piece suit, even if the older woman is a better swimmer. Women on the other hand prefer male players in tight uniforms (example: Baseball), versus an older, gray-haired man.
