It depends on if you're strictly using your board to get around, or if you prefer to do tricks and the like. Although there are certain tricks that can be performed on a longboard, longboards are typically used for transportation and "Cruising".

Cruiser Boards are usually Shortboards or "Shlongboards" that can be used for both cruising and street-tricks.

Longboards are, well, longer, which allow the board to travel for a longer amount of time. If cruising is your main objective, then I would highly suggest a longboard.

Go skate, and see what you like best.

you should go to like a mall or skate shop and ask for a secter9 board there about 90-150 and up but there nice and have good shape for that price and a good beginner board.
