Skateboarding began by surfers taking wheels off of roller skates and putting the wheels onto little pieces of wood. Miniature surf boards is what the surfers called them back in the 1950s when they were first invented. Skateboarding actually started in Hawthorne California in 1961 when a bunch of young surfers going to Leuzinger and Hawthorne High Schools wanted to improve their skills while at school so they attached halves of roller skates to the bottom of 2 x 4's about 2 1/2' long and rode them around the halls between classes. Two of these kids were 9th graders named Carl JOHNSON and Mike RICE. The rest is history.
People got roller skates and took the wheels and trucks off them and nailed them to a piece of wood.
