Californian Surfers Wanted to still "surf" While the waves were low. They started with a piece of wood and metal wheels, and then became more advanced, until now. THis started sometime in the 1950's!!

Skateboarding actually started in Hawthorne California in 1961 when a bunch of young surfers going to Leuzinger and Hawthorne High Schools wanted to improve their skills while at school so they attached halves of roller skates to the bottom of 2 x 4's about 2 1/2' long and rode them around the halls between classes. Two of these kids were 9th graders named Carl JOHNSON and Mike RICE. The rest is history.
