Rounders is slightly similar to Baseball-softball - the 2 major differences being that pitches must be underarm and the bat used is shaped more like a very small, light-weighted cricket bat - having a flat face.

2 teams, each consisting of 9 players, take it in turns to field and bat. The objective when fielding is to ensure the other team doesn't score a rounder/run/home run. The objective when batting, is to hit the ball as far or as hard as you can to score a rounder (or half rounder).

If a player runs to 2nd base, they score half a rounder

If a player runs to 4th/Home base, they score a whole rounder.

Fielding:

- All players who stand on a post/base must stand inside it or it will be classed as obstruction

- Players are not allowed to purposefully stand in the way of a running batter

- If the bowler bowls 2 'no balls' (too high, too low, too wide or too close to the body), then the batting team automatically scores half a rounder

- Players must have a hand on the ball when it comes in contact with a post for the batter to be stumped out - the ball cannot be thrown.

- When pitching the ball, the bowler cannot step outside the 'box', and must deliver underarm on the full [as in softball, etc]. Once the ball has been hit, the pitcher may move wherever she/he likes.

The bowler will stand in the middle of the 4 posts and throw the ball underarm for the batter to hit. They must make sure they do not throw a 'no ball' (see rules above), to give the batting team a fair chance of scoring a hit.

Another player needed is a 'backstop'. This person will stand behind the batter [as in baseball and softball] and catch the ball if it is hit behind, or collect the ball if it is not hit by the batter. Once the backstop has the ball, they can either throw it to the bowler to stop the batter from running any further, throw it to the player on 2nd base to stop the batter from scoring half a rounder or throw it to the player on 4th base to stop the batter from scoring a full rounder. Once the bowler is holding the ball in his/her box, the batting team can not run on from the post they have reached.

Usually, fielders are placed at each base. The rest of the fielding team are then spread out around and behind the bases to either catch a ball or to collect it when hit by a batter. Once the ball has been hit, the fielding team try to get the ball to someone standing on a post in order to prevent the batting team scoring a rounder.

After 18 hits (1 inning), the teams will swap to play the opposite positions.

In another version, all players must be 'out' to finalize the innings

Batting:

- The batter must hold their bat with 1 hand (as it is quite light).

- The batter must run if they hit the ball or not. The only time they don't have to run is if the ball is called as a 'no ball'

- If the ball is hit behind them then the batter is only allowed to run to 1st base. As soon as the backstop has thrown the ball over the back line, the batter is allowed to run on from 1st base

- When waiting on a post, the batter must hold the post at all times else they can be stumped out by the fielding team

- If the fielding team has already stumped 1st, 2nd 3rd or 4th base and the batter runs on from their post to the one that is stumped they will be out

- If the fielding team has already stumped (example) 3rd base and 1 batter is waiting at 2nd base, then another batter has just hit the ball and runs to first but then runs on to 2nd, the batter at 2nd base has no choice but to run on, meaning they will be out. This is called 'out running' another player

- If the ball is hit and a fielding player catches it without the ball touching the ground first, the batter is out

- If the batter hits the post at the exact same time as the fielder stumps the post, the batter is still in.

Officiating [Umpiring]:

"Innings": Variation 1

In each game, both teams have 2 chances to bat - 2 innings. These are called innings. In 1 inning, the batting team is allowed 18 'good' balls. If 1 batter has a 'no ball' on one hit and they still run, then the team gain an extra ball. (Example) On ball 13, 1 batter receives a 'no ball' but runs to 2nd base. Because they ran on a no ball, this means that the next batter still plays on ball 13, whereas in a normal case, on ball 5, 1 batter received a 'good ball' and ran to 3rd base, then the next batter would receive ball 6.

2 "Officiators" are needed to referee the game: 1 stands by the batters and counts how many hits they have received and whether the ball is a 'good ball' or 'no ball'. The other umpire stands behind 2nd base and judges whether the batters are 'in' or 'out'. They also count the rounders. Between innings they swap positions to ensure no favouritism is used.

In the end, the team with the most rounders at the end of their 2 batting innings and the opposite team's 2nd innings wins!

The rules of rounders may seem a little more complex, but, really, once you have began to playing for 10 or 15 minutes, mostly it is quite straight forward!

Innings: Variation 2:

The objective of the fielding team is to get ALL of the other batting team out - either by catching the ball before it bounces, or by stumping them out on a post before they reach it.

There are 2 such innings.

1- Teams can be a minimum of 6 players and a maximum of 15 players. 9 players are on the field for each team at any one time.

2- One team bats while the other team fields and bowls.

3-The bowler bowls the ball to the batter who hits the ball anywhere on the Rounders pitch. The batter then runs to as many posts as possible before the fielders return the ball to touch the post the batter is heading for.

4-If the batter reaches the 2nd or 3rd post in one hit, the batting team scores ½ Rounder. If the batter reaches 4th post in one hit, the batting team scores a Rounder.

5-A batter can be out if the fielding team catch the ball hit by the batter before it touches the ground or by touching the post the batter is heading to with the ball before the batter reaches it.

1. Bowling no balls- The bowler must bowl a ball towards the batter so that:

· It is thrown with a smooth underarm action

· The ball arrives without bouncing and within the batters square

· The ball is above the batter's knee, below the batter's head, and not at the batter's body

· The bowler's feet are inside the bowler's square when the ball is bowled.

Otherwise a 'no-ball' is called.

A batter can attempt to hit a no-ball and can run on a no-ball, if desired whether the ball is hit or not, but cannot return once first post is reached. If two consecutive no-balls are bowled to the same batter, the batter scores a half-rounder.

2. Batting- The batter is out if:

· The batter hits the ball and it is caught without first hitting the ground

· the post being run to is 'stumped' - a fielder touches it with the ball

· the batter runs inside a post

· the batter loses contact with a post when the bowler has the ball inside the bowler's square

· the batter overtakes a fellow batter when running around the posts.

· while not running between posts, the batter obstructs a fielder

· the batter's foot is outside the batter's square when the ball is bowled

· The batter gets one chance to hit the ball (ignoring no-balls) and must run even if the ball is not struck.

· If the ball is hit behind the batting square or not hit at all, the batter can only run to first base.

· Otherwise, the batter runs around as many of the bases as possible and stops at a post only when the batter thinks there is a danger of the next post being 'stumped'.

3. Scoring rounder's- A score is immediately posted in the following situations:

  • If the batter hits the ball or is bowled a no ball and then reaches the fourth post, a rounder is scored.
  • If the batter fails to hit the ball and reaches the fourth post, a half-rounder is scored.
  • If the batter hits the ball and reaches the second post, a half-rounder is scored.
  • A fielder obstructs a batter running to a post, a half-rounder is scored.

If the batter hits the ball and reaches the first, second or third post without being out, the batter stays at that post (and must keep in contact with it) until the next ball is bowled. As soon as the ball leaves the bowler's hand, such a batter can run to the next post, if they wish, even if a no-ball is called.

If the batter does not keep contact with the post, the fielding side can stump the next post to get the player out. 2 batters cannot be at the same post so a batter must run on to the next post if the next batter catches up with them.

  • A batter who continues in this way and reaches the fourth post scores a half-rounder.

Once the fourth post is reached, the person goes to the back of the batter's line and awaits their next turn to bat.

4. Winning- After both sides have played both innings, the side with the most rounder's wins.

5. Other rules-

· A team consisting of a maximum of 15 players and a minimum of 6 of and no more than 9 may be on the field at one time. An innings is over when the 9th batter is out.

  • If the ball goes behind, the batter may only run to first post but may continue to run once the ball has returned in front of the batter's square again. In this way, it is possible to reach 4th post and score a rounder, even if the ball is hit behind
  • A batter can run to a post even if it has been previously stumped but there is no score if this is done on 4th Post
  • When the bowler has the ball in his square, you cannot move on, but if you are between Posts, you can carry on to the next.
  • You must touch 4th Post on getting home.

Why did baseball come from rounders?

American baseball was derived from both rounders and cricket, which are both traditional British bat-and-ball games. In rounders, which was often played in town squares, stakes were driven into the ground to act as bases. During the late 1800s, people replaced the stakes with bases, and began to refer to it as "townsball." This eventually morphed into "baseball," and set guidelines of rules and regulations were set in writing in 1845.
