The speed of a longboard on flatland has more than just how fast you push in consideration. The quality of the wheels is important, as well as how maintained the bearings are, the road condition, and how much wind or force keeping you back there is. A smooth road with harder wheels is faster than a rocky road with hard wheels. Also, soft wheels are slower than hard wheels on most surfaces. Then you have to judge how hard you can push.
If you want to know when someone would use a longboard skateboard, it would be if they are wanting to go fast. The longboard's design is different than a normal skateboard designs which allows it to go very fast.

Well it all depends on where or what terrain you are riding on. On flatland, pumping can get you anywhere from 15-20 mph. Going downhill is another story. On longboards with good bearings and proper wheels, you can reach up to 45-50 mph.
