A good ballet teacher makes sure to have their students do many stretches in every lesson so that their students will become more and more flexible. The more flexible a ballet dancer is, the more capable he or she is of doing the more difficult steps, such as grands ronds de jambes and penché. Flexibility can also making such steps seem easy, giving the illusion of being nearly weightless.
