You are probably thinking of Igor Stravinsky. The 1913 Paris premiere of his "Rite of Spring" literally caused rioting in the audience. Ravel was in the audience (or was it Debussy?) and the future conductor of the Boston Symphony, Pierre Monteaux.
First premiered by ballet Rambert (known then as Rambert dance company) on 3rd July 1981 at bristol Theatre Royal.

Aaron Copland won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945 for his ballet score "Appalachian Spring."
Stravinsky was most famous for the Rite of Spring because of its riotous premiere in 1913. He became famous in 1910 for his popular ballet score The Firebird for the Ballet Russe, he became instantly famous. He died in New York in 1971.

The ballet depicts pagan Russia. A group of Elders leads a ritual celebrating the arrival of Spring, in which they select a young girl who then sacrifices herself by dancing to death.
