well with ballet you should start before you 20. And boys are put off by tutus and things like that when they are young. So by the time they are 20 and realise that ballet is not JUST for girls then they willl consider it. But they probably won't become a pro since they are quite old. BUt they might!
Alonso performed as a child in the school and company of Sociedad pro Arte in Havana, Cuba. Moving to New York City at age 15 she danced with Ballet Caravan, in Broadway musicals, and in {American} Ballet Theatre from 1941 to 1948. She headed Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, concurrently performing in and organizing Ballet Alicia Alonso in Havana. The company ultimately became the National Ballet de Cuba.
It depends on your skill. If you catch on very easily, and are able to learn at an advanced level very quickly, you may only need a few years where as others may need at least 7 years. Most dancers start at an early age. Maria Tallchief was considered by many to be too old when she began in her teens.
In ballet, you can express yourself, have fun, and you can make other people have fun. Not to mention the fitness benefits! :) I believe excellent balance is the major benefit sought after by pro-athletes. Roger Federer, world's #1 tennis player took ballet for years. Ballet is good for the mind as well as the body. It is good for mental stimulation because it involves memorisation of several steps and terms. Also, it may have a calming effect.
