If you have more than five inches between you and the ground, then just slide into your split where it's comfortable for you. Then go down about an inch at a time. If if there are less than five inches between you and the ground, try the more advanced way- put your front heel on the bottom stair (or a few thick books, a window sill, the bottom rung of a chair, etc.) and slide into your split. Sit there for 30 or so seconds, then do your split flat on the ground. After you've stretched on the stair (or whatever you may choose), then it should feel actually a lot more comfortable on the ground. This will, in turn, help you stretch it more on the ground since it wont feel as uncomfortable. If you work at it this way, then you should have a lovely flat split in about a month!
