The first ballets were performed about 500 years ago in Italy and France. They were usually exciting shows of dancing and singing performed for the royal families and their guests.
The first real Ballet on record was staged in the year 1581. The grand performance was calledLe Ballet Comique de la Reine, meaning "The Comic Ballet of the Queen." Catherine de Medici, the French queen, arranged the ballet performance to celebrate a wedding. The ballet started at 10PM and lasted for 5 hours. About 10,000 guests were in attendance.
Enrico Cecchetti and his wife opened a ballet school in London in 1918. This helped establish Ballet in Britain. Dame Marie Rambert a former student of the Cecchetti founded the Ballet Club, the UK's first ballet troop that still exist today.
