Until they begin to find what they are doing too hard and it becomes dangerous for them to continue. This happens quite early on as ballet takes a lot of hard work and strength which usually only the younger dancers can provide. Also, many ballet dancers get arthritis from using their bodies in a way that it was not designed for. The average age that a ballet dancer will retire is about 25 - 35, depending on the general health and fitness of the dancer. After this however, many dancers go on to teach ballet until the usual age of retirement, 60 - 65.
In my mind a professional ballerina went to ballet classes for seven years, age is best at 10-12 yrs. This person MUST go to class EVERY day! So for seven years every day for 2-3 hours you should be a professional ballerina
You don't need a license to teach ballet. If you want to be a ballet teacher you need to have strong ballet technique, and good exprience. You need to understand that no ballet dancer should go en pointe befor teh age of 12 and what it takes to become a professional ballet dancer as many of your students may want to know this. receiving a B.F.A. in ballet for sure helps. What also helps is being a professional dancer, but this isn't required. Start out my finding a ballet school and contacting the school asking if they have jobs available. Create a good resume, too. Remember to always provide your ballet students with a challengng, but friendly atmosphere where they can improve. To be the best ballet teacher keep your dancers posted on their strengths and areas in need of improvemnet. Good luck!
Most ballet dancers are young, in their teens or twenties. There are some older ballet dancers, but ive never heard of one past their thirties. There is no set "retirement age"
The world oldest ballet dancer is Charin Yuthasastrkosol, who was born in 1930. She started dancing at the age of 47 and hasn't stopped since. AMAZING! Check out the website www.charinsdream.com.
Any age is a good time to start but if you are 20 it would be very hard to become a professional ballet dancer. If you are just doing it for fun and for exercise that is okay.

The average age for a ballet dancer to begin pointe is 12 years old. This allows time for the dancer's bones to develop. There is no specific age however, that one begins pointe. To begin pointe a dancer must not only have been trained in ballet for a number of years and have acheived a certain skill level, but they must also have acquired the neccesary muscles and strength in the ankle, legs etc. to begin pointe work. A dance teacher will be able to determine the physical readiness of a dancer in regards to begining pointe.
You need lots of Ballet. I recommend starting at a very young age if you want to be professional. Jazz is also a good dance style to have under your belt if you want to be a dancer. If your looking at being a Musical Theater dancer then you NEED to have tap. You never know when you could be asked to tap dance.
The typical path of a dancer to a prima ballerina is beginning training at a ballet school from around age 5 to 13, auditioning and then getting accepted to a professional company's year-round program for pre-professionals at around age 14-18, being accepted into the company as a trainee, and then working your way up the ranks from corp de ballet, demi soloist, soloist, and the principal dancer (prima ballerina).
She started her professional training at the Charlotte School, in London. Her dancing career at the Royal Ballet began at the age of 13.
