Paralympic is a combination of the words "paraplegic" (people with spinal injuries) and "Olympics". Another more formal explanation is "para" is Greek for beside or alongside and the Paralympics are held at the same time as the Olympics.....parallel/alongside.

they cant enter the olympics so they came up with the paralympics for the impaired
Why not? Just because someone is restricted in physical or mental capacity in one way or another, doesn't mean they don't have a competitive edge.
so it gives disabled people a chance to have a go at doing what they really whant to do.

"Para" means side by side as in "parallel lines". Therefor Paralympic means 'side by side with the Olympics.

They are called the Paralympics because it is a form of the Olympics for pelagic (aka people who have lost/amputated limbs).
