Contrary to a popular myth The Grand National, Boat Race and FA Cup semi Finals have NOT all been on the same day, well not in the last 55 years at least. The closest this came to occurring was in 1992 when the National and Boat Race were both on Saturday 4 April and the FA Cup Semi Finals were held a day later on Sunday 5 April. A same day Grand National/FA Cup Semi Finals double is a more common occurrence than a Grand National/Boat Race double, the former last occurring as recently as 2012, whereas the latter has only occurred three times since 1970 (1981, the aforementioned 1992 and of course 2015). In both 1981 and 2015 the FA Cup semi Finals were held a week after the National/Boat Race double. The National and Boat Race usually do their best to avoid being held on the same day. Indeed there are instances when both were on the same weekend but with the boat race taking place on the Sunday to avoid the Grand National which is always on a Saturday. Finally, although Easter regularly falls in late March or early April I cannot find any occasion in the last 50 years when the Grand National has been run on Easter Saturday.

Both are :-)The Grand National course is 4 miles, 880 yards - 7,242 metresThe Boat Race course is 4 miles and 374 yards - 6,779 metresSo the Grand National course is longer. But, as rowing is slower progress than horse-racing The Boat Race takes longerThe current Course Record is 16 mins 19 secs - set by Cambridge in 1998.The Grand National Course Record is 8mins 47.8 secs set by Mr Frisk 1990.So, either way, you win your bet.
The Oxford and Cambridge Boat RaceThe Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards.Grand National The Grand National is a Grade 3 handicap chase currently restricted to six-year-old and above horses.
