Stem - n/vb movement requiring opposing outward pressure much like a child climbing a door jam.

In other words, in stead of pushing up with your feet (or pulling up with your hands), you place a hand or foot against a face and push off of it to maintain your balance. An example would be wedging yourself in a chimney climb, using either hands or feet.
