One reason is the athletes competed, "nude". The second and most important, most of the games required "strength" as a key fator. Against men, the match was unfair and thus not worthy of viewing. Most likely either law, or social mores prevented women from competing. In ancient Greece and like most "other civilizations", women would not typically be allowed to even practice "war like" sports. Most sports are derived from war-like activities ie... running, chasing, throwing, Wrestling and so on... Perhaps there are exceptions to this.. keep looking...
No only men and boys can compete?
In the ancient Olympic games women were not allowed to compete, but now they are.
If you mean the ancient Olympic games in Rome or Italy where ever it was then it is because they would compete naked to make sure they weren't a girl( because back then girls weren't allowed to compete in Olympic games) and it was also in the same place unlike nowadays.
