The first Olympic games were held in Greece. The Greeks believed that the 12 main deities lived on Mount Olympus. So they named the games in honor of their Gods. That name has filtered into modern history and is the name for the Winter and Summer Olympic games

In addition, there is a town on the Peleponnese named Olympia. It was the site of the original olympic games held in the 776 B.C.E. A large part of the stadium and hippodrome are is still intact and may be visited. Olympia is also the site of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. The statue is long gone but part of the temple remains.

The word Olympics derives from the Greek word " Olympia." Meaning " A battle of the Gods " In ancient Greece an event was held every 6 years to determine who swung the biggest penis to the women. Women would cast their votes in "balloes " which today are known as ballots, after a demonstration would commence among the men of the country. Men would arrive by boat from all over the globe by the droves for an opportunity to show case their prodigious gift. After 300 years, the program was re-written after women rights activists protested equality and fairness.

If the Olympics were never canceled how many would there be?

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing will be called the 29th Olympiad. They are actually numbered as if they were held every four years. For example, the cancelled 1916 Olympics would have been the 6th, but the 1920 Olympics were called the 7th. The Olympics were skipped in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to the wars. So the 29th Olympiad will really be the 26th modern Olympics.
